Stainless Care

Cleaning Stainless Steel

Retaining a clean and shiny finish on stainless steel surfaces is just a matter of following a few simple tips and precautions…

Tips

• Use of a mild detergent that has been diluted in some warm water, along with a soft cloth or brush is generally all that is needed to get the surface clean again (remember that only a small amount of mild detergent should be used, the reason for this is that a stronger detergent will need a lot more water to remove the residue left behind).

• If mild detergent does not work you can also use some methylated spirits or glass cleaner on a soft cloth (great for removing grease marks and fingerprints).

• Clean regularly and use LOTS of water, but remember to wipe the surface dry strait away to prevent streaky marks (best results are gained from using a soft absorbent cloth).

• A longer protection can be achieved by wiping some olive oil onto the surface and then polishing it off using a soft cloth.

• Always clean in the direction of the grain, this prevents streaking.

• Cleaning Stainless Steel on a regular basis is highly recommended as this will prevent stubborn stains (prevention is always better than the cure)

• To remove tea or coffee stains the item should be left to sit in a solution of boiling water and some baking, or bi-carb soda.

• To remove sticky labels you should initially use a hair dryer to heat and soften the glue under the label to ensure easy removal of the label its self, and then use a eucalyptus oil based cleaner (or the oil its self) to remove the remaining glue.

Precautions

• Using a mere wet cloth to clean Stainless Steel is not recommended as this usually smears the dirt on the surface rather than removing it.

• Do not leave Stainless Steel in contact with acids, salts or carbon steels (wet or not) for prolonged periods of time as this will discolor or stain your item (as the name suggests it is Stain-Less not stain Proof).

• Never use steel wool to clean Stainless Steel as it is usually made up of a carbon steel and any particals left behind will rust onto the Stainless (also be careful of other types of scourers that have been used on carbon steel for the same reason)

Good Luck.
